The Chinese Embassy in the DPRK hosted a reception at the Taedonggang Diplomatic Club on 1 August commemorating the 86th anniversary of the foundation of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army [PLA]. Vice Minister of the People’s Armed Forces, Col. Gen. Kang P’yo Yong (Kang P’yo-yo’ng), attended the reception along with senior Korean People’s Army [KPA] officers, DPRK Government officials, cadres and functionaries of the KPA General Political Department and the Korean Workers’ Party [KWP] Military Affairs Department and ambassadors, diplomatic officials and military attaches from foreign embassies in the DPRK. Before the reception, PRC Ambassador to the DPRK Liu Hongcai met with Col. Gen. Kang. Major General Zhang Ping, the PRC Embassy’s National Defense Attache, and Col. Gen. Kang P’yo Yong delivered speeches at the reception which, according to the PRC Embassy, “reviewed the glorious combatant course of the Chinese PLA in the past 86 years, warmly extolled the traditional friendship between the two peoples and the two armies of China and the DPRK, and said they will continue to promote a healthy and steady development of friendly relations of cooperation between the two countries and the two armies of China and the DPRK, and actively contribute to safeguarding regional peace and stability.”
The reception “proceeded in a friendly and warm atmosphere” and “guests extended their congratulations on the occasion of the Chinese PLA 86th founding anniversary and complimented the Chinese army on its achievements in construction and development.” According to the PRC Embassy “on display at the banquet hall were many military publications for foreign readers; photos of the launching of the ‘Shenzhou 10″ spacecraft, the outgoing voyage of the aircraft carrier ‘Liaoning,’ escort voyage of the Chinese Navy formation, Sino-foreign joint military exercises. . .as well as the scroll playback of the documentary ‘Chinese Military Today’ which were all well-received by the guests.”
