It wasn’t.  I was never sent to Viet Nam.  I was blessed to stay in the US for my entire “tour of duty”.  But the military was such a colossal waste of time that I could barely stand it.  It wasn’t bad (at least not for me)–but it was so damned boring that, for a while, I was ready to desert.  So, I’m not a fan of the military. It’s OK for some, I suppose, but it’s not for me.

And I’m certainly not a fan of Richard Nixon.

But here’s a video of a White House dinner hosted by President Nixon back in A.D. 1973 for returning Viet Nam POWs, and then a reunion of those same POWs held 40 years later in May of A.D.2013.

When we strip away all the crap that’s part of almost every public production, we can still sometimes glimpse moments of genuine decency.  Such moments can give us a sense of pride in our fellow man and, therefore, hope in ourselves.  We screw up, and we screw up and we screw up.  But every once in while, we come close to doing something right.  We are therefore not irredeemable.
