Postdoc at the University of Washington

We are pleased to invite applications for a postdoctoral Research Associate for two (2) years in philosophy of physics at the University of Washington. The position is funded by the NSF grant: “The Role of the Classical Limit and Symmetries in Constructing Quantum Theories,” led by Benjamin Feintzeig. The post-doc will work on conceptual and mathematical issues in the foundations of quantum physics, and will become part of the philosophy of science research group in the Department of Philosophy at UW.

We seek scholars with a background and interest in conceptual and mathematical issues in the foundations of quantum physics. The successful candidate may have a PhD, or foreign equivalent, in philosophy, mathematics, physics, or a related field, but the position will be housed in the Department of Philosophy at UW. The post-doc will collaborate closely with principal investigator Benjamin Feintzeig (UW Philosophy) on the project. The post-doc will be expected to work with algebraic methods for representing quantum systems, symmetries, and the classical limit in order to establish mathematical results of philosophical interest, and to explore foundational implications of mathematical results for philosophical issues surrounding scientific discovery. Additionally, the post-doc will assist with the organization of annual interdisciplinary workshops on the construction of quantum theories. Further, the post-doc will have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate student researchers, and may have the opportunity to teach courses for the Department of Philosophy if they have appropriate credentials.

The position will provide postdoctoral research salary support for two (2) years. The post-doc will also be provided with funds to travel to conferences for research dissemination and professional development. The position will have full time status with an annual service period of 12 months. Review of applications will begin on May 1, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled. We anticipate a start date in September 2019, but a later start date will be considered.

Qualifications
Eligible candidates will be trained in the foundations of physics, broadly construed. A PhD is required by the start of the appointment. The applicant’s PhD may be in philosophy, mathematics, physics, or a related field. Applicants must have no more than 3 years of previous post-doctoral experience. Strong candidates will have a background with mathematical methods in quantum physics, will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and will have demonstrated ability for conceptual engagement in the foundations of physics.
