When our Indonesian friends took us to visit a fish farm near Kupang on Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia, these local children started following us. As bules (foreigners) we were a curiosity, as they had never seen people with light skin before and didn’t know quite what to think.
These curious children would follow behind us wherever we went. Every time I turned around with my camera, they would giggle and run from me. This went on for quite a while until finally, when we reached the village, they warmed up to the little Indonesian boy who was with us and decided they wanted to play. At long last we were able to get some shots with them in one place. No more children playing shy.
What fun it was, so refreshing to see the innocence of these kids.
