Positive Response from Acting President for a People’s Council

Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe has responded positively to the proposal of establishing a People’s Council by those engaged in the Galle Face Aragalaya (Struggle).

Wickremesinghe had said the People’s Council mentioned in the proposals submitted by the Galle Face youth groups was a positive one during a discussion with Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament at the Parliament Complex on Saturday.

The Acting President also said that the activists of the Aragalaya will be informed about the measures that will be taken to fight corruption.

The Aragalaya group recently announced a six-proposal programme to ensure good governance in the country.

One of the proposals for a People’s Council in which the people can contribute to the formulation and amendment of the laws of the land.

Wickremesinghe, addressing Parliament on May 29 announced that the proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment will include a proposal to appoint four youth representatives for each of the proposed 15 Parliamentary Committees.

He said that three of them will be selected from the youth and other groups in the struggle and the method of selection can be decided by the youth organizations themselves.
