Porto’s São Nicolau In Black and White

By Gail Aguiar @ImageLegacy

You probably won’t recognize the parish name of São Nicolau, but you’ll know a section of it as Ribeira (riverside), one of the most touristy areas (if not the most) in Porto. In 2013, the parish of São Nicolau merged into the new amalgamated parish of (take a deep breath) Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau e Vitória. Each freguesia still has its own board and office that serves the parish — the junta de freguesia — but the amalgam parish represents the historic centre of Porto as a unified body. (In theory, anyway.)

The namesake church that anchors the parish of São Nicolau is on the right:

I took these photos today while tour guiding our Turkish couchsurfer with Ice the Dog. I first joined her across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia in the afternoon, then we aimed for Ribeira in the early evening and made it our dinner location. While she was looking at handicrafts, I took Ice to his favourite spot in São Nicolau which is of course a park — Jardim do Infante Dom Henrique.

When it comes to an area I regularly photograph such as Porto’s historic centre, I convert some of the images to black and white. I find it helps me see these places differently, and I try to shoot them differently going forward.
