Popsicle Portraits

This was a very successful Mother’s Day project this year. Magnets could be added to the back so it could go right on the fridge.1. I recommend the jumbo popsicle sticks from Michael’s. I had 2nd graders on up glue their own boards with craft glue from start to finish. I started kinders and 1st with a “U” shape for them to complete.2. This sample was made on dry wax paper, which is thin but does not bleed. Have the students draw a 4" border and then draw their portrait inside in pencil. You might go over basic facial proportions before they start.3. When the pencil drawing is done, using Sharpie permanentmarkers, trace the line art in black and then color in. I used 24 and 36-packs of colored Sharpies to include skin-tones. When the square is completely colored in and a name is added the square is cut out with scissors.4. Make a 50/50 mix of water and white glue and have each student brush the entire popsicle board AND the backside of the drawing to avoid bubbling. Center the drawing on the board, press down and brush over with the watered down glue to seal.
