A few days after the release of Ubuntu 20.10 "Groovy Gorilla", with its seven official flavors, System76 has ad a new Linux Pop distribution! _OS 20.10 based on upstream Ubuntu 20.10.
What's new in Pop! _OS 20.10?
Being built on Ubuntu 20.10, Pop OS 20.10 includes upstream changes such as Linux Kernel 5.8, GNOME 3.38, and security updates. Besides, the new Pop OS has also added its own tweaks and features that make it different from Ubuntu rather than another variant.
1. Support for Deb822 repository format
Continuing development from Pop! _OS 20.04, v20.10 supported the deb822 repository format, which makes the list of system sources more compact and easier to understand.
Subsequently, support for deb822 also brings a new library for managing repositories, which provides features such as the ability to modify system default repository mirrors, reset mirrors to defaults, and change the names of the repositories.
2. Pop stacking! _BONE
After Windows automatic tiling, Pop OS introduced another cool feature called Stacking to make the operating system more useful. Just like you switch between tabs in your web browser, you can now tile your windows in Pop OS 20.10.
To stack tiled windows, you can use the available keyboard shortcuts such as:
- Super + S: Convert a window to a stack
- Super + Enter + arrow keys or Vim shortcuts: Windows in and out of the stack
- Super + /: Launch an application in the stack
- Super + Left or Right arrows: Browse the stack windows
3. Floating window exceptions
Tiling is undoubtedly one of the best features that Pop OS provides. But sometimes application windows are too small to be effectively mosaicked. Therefore, Pop! _OS 20.10 now allows you to define floating window exceptions, which will restrict those windows from being tiled.
To use it, you can go to the mosaic menu in the upper right corner of your screen, choose Floating Window Exceptions and click "Select", which will bring you to the activity overview where you can select the window that will no longer be mosaic. .
4. Fractional scaling in Pop OS
If you want to make better use of your HiDPI monitors, this feature built into Pop OS 20.10 is sure to please you.
Go to the View menu in your settings, where you can now set your desktop to scale values between 100% and 200%, as well as 125%, 150%, or 175%, depending on what suits your screen .
5. Support for external monitors in hybrid graphics mode
If you are tired of restarting your system in NVIDIA mode to use an external monitor, Pop OS 20.10 has now made it easier for you by adding support for external monitors in Hybrid Graphics mode.
This means that you no longer need to restart your computer or change modes when connecting and disconnecting external monitors.
How to get Pop! _OS 20.10?
If you are already using the older version of Pop OS, you can easily upgrade your system to Pop OS 20.10. The only thing you need to do is open the Settings app first, go to the OS Upgrades menu, click "Downloads" and then click Upgrade.
You can also run a single command in your terminal to upgrade:
pop-upgrade release upgrade
For a fresh install from scratch, download the ISO image of Pop! _OS 20.10 on the official website page. As usual, two images are available: one as usual and one with proprietary NVIDIA drivers.
