 Recycled Pop Bottle Planter

Wait! Don’t throw those pop bottles out! ( you were putting them into the recycle box right? ) Well, pull them out. Here is a super easy, fun summer garden craft you can make turning that useless plastic into pretty Pop Bottle Planter.

First I want to make this very clear….

DO NOT USE THESE FOR FOOD PLANTS!

Plastic bottles have PCB’s that can leach into the soil when watered not to mention that the sun’s UV rays also breakdown plastic, so don’t plant edible herbs or anything you would consume in them. This project is intended to recycle your bottles using ornamental plants only.

Okay, stepping off my soap box…. let’s get to the fun part!

Rinse out your bottles, remove the labels and take off the cap. You can use any size of bottle for this garden craft, obviously the bigger the bottle… the bigger the plant that can be grown in it.

Use a marker and cut out an opening in the side of the bottle. I got it started with an box cutter then used scissors to snip out the rest.

Drill a small hole into the caps and another one in the bottom of the bottle. This will allow for drainage and if you plan to tier yours like I did, you’ll need that hole for connecting.

I spray painted my bottles and caps bright green so they would make a nice background for my plants, but you can choose any old color your heart desires.

I used some florist wire to poke through the hole and pinched it inside the top bottle’s cap so it wouldn’t slip out and then I ran a longer wire through all three bottles and their caps pinching it again on the bottom one to hold them in place.

Time to add some soil and an annual basket stuffer that you love. If you used bigger bottles, a 4″-6″ plant will fit just fine. I used a little moss to help hold the soil in and I thought it added to the planter pocket visually too.

That’s it! How perfect is this project for kids? Turn an ugly useless plastic into a cool recycled tiered planter and feel happy you created something green….with something even more green!  Have fun making this Pop Bottle Planter…. I did.
