(Warsaw) Outgoing Polish President Andrzej Duda, who is a candidate for re-election, said on Saturday that he wanted to ban the adoption of same-sex couples in the Constitution.

"In the Polish Constitution, it should be explicitly stated that it is prohibited to adopt anyone who is in a homosexual relationship," he said during an electoral rally in Szczawno- Zdroj (south).
"To ensure the safety of a child and a correct education, and so that the Polish State safeguards the rights of children [...], I believe that such a provision should exist", did he he adds.
M. Duda, a member of the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS, conservative and nationalist), announced that he would sign a presidential draft amendment to the Constitution on Monday and present it to parliament.
The president, who arrived last Sunday at the head of the first round of the presidential election, will face the liberal candidate, the mayor of Warsaw Rafal Trzaskowski, during the second round on 12 July.
During the campaign, Mr. Duda continued to stir up controversy by supporting PiS attacks on gay rights and Western values. He compared "LGBT ideology" to a new form of communism.

Trzaskowski, he defends the rights of homosexuals and said he was open to the idea of civil partnerships of the same sex, even if he told journalists on Saturday that he was also "against adoptions by homosexual couples" . "I believe that is the position of most political parties [...]. On this particular subject, I agree with the president, "he added.
Only 9% of Poles support the right to adopt for homosexual couples, according to a survey by 2019 carried out by the CBOS institute. 29% are in favor of same-sex marriage.
