Architect and linguist, decipherer of Linear B – script found on tablets in the ancient Cretan city of Knossos in the early 20th Century. Ventris first saw the script as a schoolboy in the 1930 at Burlington House. Educated as an architect rather than a linguist, his work on Linear B, with John Chadwick and Alice Kober, culminated between 1951 and 1953.
