Places to Visit in Sonmarg

By Dinesh Singh @travellerpath

Sonmarg, in Jammu & Kashmir, is secluded, scenic and surreal. You will need a really strong willpower to disenthrall yourself from this place’s spell. More or less, Sonmarg can be summed up as an open landscape replete with hills, lakes and glaciers. As a tourist destination, it is outstanding.

Here are the 5 places that are so gorgeous that they will simply enslave you:

Zojila Pass: This pass makes you feel low and humble before the might of the mountains. It is an excellent region whose scenic beauty is second to none. It also serves as a connector and has facilitated trade since historic times, but for a tourist the point to note is its awe-inspiring beauty and an unearthly atmosphere.

Gangabal Lake: It is a quiet transparent lake, like a thin sheet of ice sitting before you as you walk alongside its green-brown shore. The mountains look down upon its waters, casting their grim reflection on its turquoise body and thus creating a very surreal ambiance. The place is not only fit for sightseeing but also for camping and hiking. A day spend here will be worth remembering for a whole lifetime.

Thajiwas Glacier: It is an incredibly fun place to be at. The sight of the snow and glacier can be a balm to the eye. Plus, who can refute the charm of snow fights and that anticipation of digging your boots into a pile of snow. The slopes can be precarious sometimes, so make sure to take care of your kids and cameras.

Baltal Valley: Baltal Valley is one of the key points and the highlights of the tour when one is heading for Amarnath Yatra. That doesn’t mean that you cannot visit it during a tour of Sonmarg. However, the remote location of the place may make it merely a dream for you, a dream that is hard to fulfill. Sceneries abound this place and if you are really driven by that craze to indulge in euphoria, probably you will just call up a tour operator and check out this place.

Gadsar Lake: The Lake is less heard of, as most tourists skip it. It is not one of the most convenient places to reach and you will require a Herculean level of passion to access the spot. But its beauty lies in its isolation and you may just get that feel of fearful joy when you reach this lonely lake.

All in all, Sonmarg holds many natural riches. These five places are some of the most beauteous spots in the region, but you must remember that the whole of Sonmarg is a cake of snowy paradise. It is impossible to segregate one piece from the other. So, just go, follow your heart and be ready to turn into a slave!
