The Battista Anniversario will be the most powerful legal Italian car ever made, according to the company.

It will be so limited, in fact, that only five examples will be constructed - all by hand.

Pininfarina will only build 150 copies of the Battista hyper car, including the five Anniversarios, and production is expected to start later in 2020.

The Anniversario celebrates its 90th anniversary since Battista Farina created the coachbuilder and the design house Pininfarina.

It was to be unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show, but the event was canceled due to the coronavirus epidemic.

"My grandfather always had the vision that one day there would be an autonomous range of Pininfarina brand cars," said Paolo Pininfarina, president of Pininfarina, at the company's headquarters near Turin, Italy.

"The Battista Anniversario, named in his honor to mark the 90th anniversary of the carrozzeria he launched, is a glorious way to connect our past to the future of the automobile."

"Faster than many race cars"

Powered by four electric motors generating 1,900 horsepower, the Anniversario has a top speed faster than the ordinary Battista, increasing to 217 mph.

The hyper car will accelerate from 0 to 300 km / h (186 mph) in less than 12 seconds, and will be faster than a current Formula 1 car in the sprint of less than two seconds 0-100 km / h (62 mph).

The Anniversario will also have zero emission autonomy of more than 310 miles, the company said.

Each of the five cars will take several weeks to paint by hand by Pininfarina artists while the bodywork is dismantled and reassembled three times.

Former Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld has tested the Battista and is impressed with what he has seen.

"I have driven the fastest road and racing cars in the world. I have never driven anything as powerful as the Battista," said the 42-year-old driver.

"The Battista is faster than many racing cars, but it is not a pure racing machine. Motor skills in all situations is its main objective. We will now focus our time tests and develop Battista to deliver a car at the forefront of technological possibilities and innovation. "

Pininfarina was purchased by Indian giant Mahindra Group in 2015 for $ 185 million.
