Photoessay: Katara Cultural Village, Doha: a Multifarious Recreational Centre

By Rashmi Gopal Rao

One of the most popular haunts in Doha is the multifaceted Katara Cultural Village.  An ode to the rich heritage of art, architecture and traditions of Qatar, Katara is located in North Doha.  Envisioned by HH Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, Katara celebrates the cultural spirit of the country.

Built in a unique architectural style, it is a forum for scholars and artists and is aimed at promoting Qatari culture.

The entire complex is a divided into several regions where visitors can take a stroll around and enjoy the sights.  The project has a massive amphitheatre, mosque, cultural centre, post office, music academy and theater society.

Katara offers a wonderful platform for artists, art enthusiasts and art lovers to showcase their work in the form of exhibitions, symposiums, events and carnivals.

The village is a great option to spend an entire day as it houses several restaurants, cafes, eateries as well as an impeccably maintained beach within.

What I personally loved about Katara were the aesthetics of its layout, design and green spaces.  It was such a pleasure walking in between the colourful patches of plants and flower beds!

The best time to visit Katara is during the late afternoons and evenings as you can enjoy the beach when the sun is not too harsh.  Buggy services are available for commute within the village.  For more information, check out their site here.
