This is the sixth bottle in the Pfriem Brett Brux Pale series I'm doing. This was the original incarnation of the brewery's homage to Orval, the classic Belgian brett pale ale, brewed with the wild yeast Brettanomyces Bruxellensis. You can read all about Orval and the various reviews I've done as well take a look at all the photos I took on a visit a few years ago here.
While Pfriem Brett Brux Pale Ale is an homage to Orval, it's not a direct clone and still carries its own distinctness. While this particular incarnation was only released once, they've released various other versions every year. If you like Orval or Brett beers where the brettanomyces isn't overdone but properly balanced, this is a great line of beers to try out.
Appearance: Hazy Gold, beige head, great retention.
Aroma: Bready, pineapple, orange, spicy, floral, orange blossom, fruity, vanilla.
Taste: Light earthy tones, mild funk, fruity, tropical notes.
Overall Impression: So far, the beer is remaining balanced. The yeast is becoming more prominent and starting to put out some very nice fruity esters. The yeast is also drying out the beer by consuming the sugars left from the darker malts that regular yeast can't consume. The beer has developed a light tartness and possesses a long and pleasant finish. If you have some bottles lying around, it's at a good stage. I'm looking forward to the next bottle.
Availability: Sold out long ago.
6.9% ABV
