Peggy Li Went From Dreaming To Living The Dream

If you are a fan of a show like Arrow or The Flash you have probably heard of the name Peggy Li once or twice.

It’s not often that the people behind a show get their names recognized and become fan favorites.  I think that is what makes people watching today’s TV Shows so great.  The people behind the scenes are just as much the stars of the shows with the actors and actresses.  Peggy Li has had her share of failures but I think we can all thank a little show called Buffy The Vampire Slayer for kick-starting the career.

We were able to sit down with Peggy in between her hectic schedule of getting pieces together for the new show season and find out more about the jeweler everyone can’t help but love.

How did you get into making jewelry?

I think I got into making jewelry the way a lot of other people do – I couldn’t afford to buy jewelry I saw in stores so I decided to make some for myself! I’ve also always been craftsy and loved working on projects and learning how to make things, whether it was potpourri, croissants or jewelry.

What is the process for making new pieces?

Making new pieces can begin with just an idea – maybe I see a shape I like or I have an outfit I want to accessorize. From the idea I sometimes sketch, sometimes I just get to work and create a prototype. Other times I find great stones, charms or materials and play with them at my bench. Once I have a design I like, I’ll sketch it to remember how I did it!

What helps inspire you when you design new pieces?

I look to creating shapes and items I haven’t made before. I love simple, feminine pieces, so my designs don’t stray far from that. I get a lot of inspiration from my customers, I love getting feedback and requests for designs from them.

You recently did an interview where you got your big break on the hit show Buffy The Vampire Slayer.  How did it feel to see your pieces on the show?

It was surreal! I saw on TV pieces of jewelry I had made with my own two hands. It was incredible to feel like I had contributed to the complexity, creativity and effort it takes to make a TV show.

What is the process on getting pieces to be on the show?

I reach out to the costume designers on TV shows I love and introduce them to my work. Many designers have also been so generous and have recommended me to colleagues or have brought me on board when they move to a new project.

Tell us what your favorite piece has been that you’ve designed right now.

A recent design that I love is my Artful Bird Necklace. Inspired by my Mom, who passed away this year, and the artist Matisse. I also love birds, so I get to put a lot of expression into what looks like a simple piece. It is airy and delicate but also dramatic. I love that kind of contrast.

Are you able to do custom work? If so, how can our viewers work with you on that?

I don’t have a lot of time or skills for custom work but anyone can email me and ask me!

There are a few people in this world that don’t have pierced ears.  Do you have any earrings for those people?

Yes! I don’t have pierced ears (funny, I know) so I offer ear cuff styles as well as the option to add clip-on findings to create clip-on earrings.

Fall is around the corner.  What do you recommend for our readers to buy for the fall season?

I’m actually into some more dramatic pendant necklaces that are long that are fun to wear solo or to layer with other pieces. Pair them with a chunky sweater and you are good to go for Fall!

Please tell our readers how they can purchase your pieces.
