Pasiparuppu-badam Paruppu urundai(Almond-green Gram Laddu)

By Harini
Pasiparuppu urundai aka nei(ghee) urundai is a very famous sweet from Tamil cuisine. It is very easy to make and very healthy one too.Though it is rich in calories due to the generous use of ghee,it is very good for kids and for adults too once in a while should not hurt :). Today I made this sweet just an hour before as offering for 8th day of navarathri, and posting it immediately. That itself says how tasty and flavorful it was :). Anyways I did make a change to the traditional recipe by adding almonds to this, and I am oh so glad I added them, almonds provided such a lovely texture and a mild crunch.I made around 20 laddus and all were gone in few minutes after poojai (worshiping) :)Here you go with the recipe for this very flavorful sweet.

Pasiparrupu-badam paruppu urundai
Star ingredients:Green gram(yellow moong) and whole almonds(badam)
Time:20+10 minutes
Yield:20
Ingredients
1/2 cup whole moong dal
1/2 cup whole almonds
2/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup ghee
4-5 cardamons
1 tablespoon broken cashews
Method:
1.Dry roast moong dal and almonds till slightly brownish.Do it in low flame, taking care not to burn.Stop once nice aroma starts wafting out.
2.Powder the roasted moong dal and almonds without adding water. You will not be able to make a very fine powder,as whole almonds are used.
3.Grind the sugar to a fine powder along with peeled cardamoms, mix with powdered moong dal and almonds.
4.Melt ghee under low flame and fry the cashews.Remove it from flame.Add the sugar-nuts powder and mix well.

5.Mix the Powdered sugar and nuts very well so that the ghee is completely coated.Make small sized balls with your palms when the mixture is still warm
6.Allow to set for 15 minute and serve.
Notes:
1.You can reduce the sugar upto 1/4 cup.
2.Do not skimp on ghee as the whole flavoring comes only from ghee.Home made ghee is best for any sweets.
3.If you want you can totally avoid sugar and use jaggery.Make very thin one string syrup with 1/2-3/4 grated jaggery and use instead of sugar.
