paruppu urundai kuzhambu recipe - lentil balls in tamarind based sauce.this is one of my favorites and i tried many times after marriage.I usually follow my Amma's recipe where she steam cook the balls in idli cooker and then add it to the kuzhambu.But after hearing that steaming cannot be necessary,you can add the balls as it is in kuzhambu and cook that in that kuzhambu itself.It seems to be interesting and i did not hesitate to give a try on that method,because i already tried kadhi gole,which is a Maharastrian delicacy where the same lentil balls are cooked in yogurt based sauce.

I already shared a recipe which is made before marriage,check that urundai kuzhambu recipe too.for a change, i made this with channa dal/split chick peas rather than going with usual tuvar dal.this tastes amazing and V loved this one and this makes both of us nostalgic.we thought of sharing old memories about this kuzhambu and enjoyed a lot.

coconut and fennel seeds paste makes the recipe more tastier and add the balls once it came to boil after adding the coconut paste.

lentil balls in tamarind based sauce

Ingredients
  • channa dal/split chickpeas - 1 cup
  • fennel seeds - 2 teaspoons
  • red chilli - 2 nos
  • garlic - 3 cloves
  • ginger - 1/4 inch
  • tamarind pulp - 1/4 cup
  • onion - 1 finely chopped
  • tomato - 1 finely chopped
  • coconut - 1/4 cup
  • red chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
  • turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • coriander powder - 2 teaspoon
  • mustard seeds .black gram seeds ,fenugreek seeds and curry leaves
  • salt - to taste
  • sesame oil - as needed
Instructions
  1. soak channa dal for 1 hour and make a coarse paste with 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds,red chilli,ginger and garlic with enough salt.make small or medium sized balls from it and keep it ready.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of sesame oil in the kadai and add mustard seeds,black gram seeds along with fenugreek seeds.Once they splutter add curry leaves.
  3. Add onion and tomato to it and cook it till it get done.Now add tamarind pulp followed by turmeric powder,red chilli powder,coriander powder and enough water for making kuzhambu.
  4. Boil the kuzhambu for 5 minutes.Meanwhile make a paste with coconut and fennel seeds and add it to the kuzhambu.add enough salt for the kuzhambu.
  5. Boil again for 3 more minutes and lower the flame.Add the lentil balls slowly one by one and wait till it comes up once it cooked.
  6. Now stir it slowly and cook it till the oil separates.
  7. serve with steamed rice.
