There are different methodologies in feeding birds – one is to buy Rice grains, wheat, millets and the like and spread them in terrace ! – the other is to produce grains that attract birds !!
This is no post on agriculture or food items but about the parrots that attacked food grains on my plant !
We can easily distinguish Rice & Whet – then there are millets – Kambu, kezhvaraghu, cholam and more. Maize also known as corn is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. The leafy stalk of the plant produces pollen inflorescences and separate ovuliferous inflorescences called ears that yield kernels or seeds, which are fruits. Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with the total production of maize surpassing that of wheat or rice.
Millet is a cereal grain with highly variable small-seeded grasses that belongs to the Poaceae family. These cereal grains are grown in warm regions with poor soils. They are major crops in the semiarid tropics of Africa and Asia. Moreover, their main advantage over other crops is that they are able to survive in less fertile soils, harsh environments, and droughts. Millet is grown for both human and animal consumption. Millet grains are small and round in shape. Furthermore, there are many varieties of millets, and we can divide them into two groups as major and minor millets. Major millets are the most commonly cultivated variety of millets and include pearl millet, foxtail millet, proso millet, and finger millet. Among these, pearl millet is the most popular and intended mainly for human consumption. Millet grains are naturally gluten-free. They are rich in dietary fibres, proteins, minerals (iron, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorous) and vitamins.
Then there is ‘Sorghum’ an Old World cereal grain that belongs to the grass family Poaceae. It’s also native to warm regions of the world and is a major source of grains and stockfeed. Like millet, sorghum is also drought resistant. It’s a popular crop to grow in the drier regions in the world. Sorghum has been introduced to America from Africa, where it has been growing for thousands of years. Moreover, sorghum plants grow tall like corn.
The cereal crops that are the most vulnerable to bird damage include wheat, barley, rice, sorghum, and millet. While there is evidence to suggest that bird taste preferences depend on various properties of sorghum, the underlying molecular mechanism has not been clear.
Today 5 / 6 parrots attacked my produce and ate away the fully grown millets, providing me good angles for photos.
