I picked one color from my previous abstract floral painting, Liquitex's heavy body brilliant purple, as the color for two of the five flowers in my new painting. I chose a light magenta for the other three, interspersing them vertically on the 10" x 48" canvas.
Before I began the flowers, I painted the whole canvas in a light blue for the background. After putting in the basic petal shapes, I painted leaves and vines in the background with a light permanet green.
For highlights on the petals, I used a palette knife to apply titanium white. I continued to use the knife to add a medium magenta, and then cadmium red deep on the purple petals. I painted the center of the purple flowers brilliant blue, and the center of the magenta flowers cadmium yellow.
Finally, I drew loose lines around the petals and the center buds with the medium magenta. I already know I don't like the background color, but will wait until my next painting session to work on that.
