Brooklyn-based trio Painted Zeros create a sonic dreamscape with their latest single “Call Back” off their forthcoming debut full-length LP Floriography.
“A lot of the songs on Floriography were written when I was going through a bad breakup, and Call Back is one of them,” says band frontwoman Katie Lau.
Katie’s effortlessly ethereal vocals float above a shoegazey swell of dreamy electric guitars layered with raw percussion and lush instrumentation (surprisingly recorded entirely in her practice space). The song contemplates a fading relationship, vacillating between waiting by the phone and moving on, with a wistfully apathetic resolve simply expressed in the chorus’ repeated refrain “Oh well, oh well….”
Self-proclaimed “dreampunx,” Painted Zeros’ band name was inspired by a Sonic Youth lyric: “He acts the hero/We paint a zero/On his hand” (‘Teen Age Riot’). As their name and “genre” suggest, they have a sound that is fresh and original with a nostalgic nod to those who came before them.
Painted Zeros have found a home on Don Giovanni Records (fellow labelmates include female-fronted Waxahatchee, Mitski and Big Eyes). Floriography comes out on October 30th. Catch their release show that night at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn.
