Orfeo – ‘California Rain’ Stream

Posted on the 04 August 2015 by Spectralnights

Originally from London but now traveling around the East coast of the States earning a living by painting houses, Orfeo belies his tender age with the honest and thought-provoking ‘California Rain’. One of the first songs from debut album ‘Purple Thursdays’, it was recommended to us by the head of label Sports Day Records after we covered Winter and although the two acts are not brilliantly similar on first listen, they both retain the craft of beautifully honest and sincere songwriting.

Very DIY and with a hint of early Jeffrey Lewis in not only its production but also the autobiographical ramblings, feelings are laid bare from the outset: ‘I got tired of your point of view’. Rough around the edges, there’s a whistle-lead finish and elements of Leonard Cohen as Orfeo laments how nobody no longer seems to care about humanities and asks ‘California, how you doing? Is it raining there, just for once…’ A deceptively simple song, full of natural candour.
