    Overview of the Position

    The incumbent will oversee, coordinate and provide fire and life safety code interpretation and enforcement, fire cause investigation and fire prevention education services in an assigned district. This position is a general service district deputy. In this position, the qualified candidate will independently make decisions on a variety of situations such as granting state licensing to a variety of care occupancies, decide the degree of fire and life safety code enforcement necessary, assess and provides fire prevention along with fire investigation assistance and training needs to local/state agencies.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Five years of full-time fire service experience. This must include two years of full-time code enforcement and one year of fire cause investigation.

    An Associate’s degree in fire prevention, fire science or related fire service field may substitute for up to two years of the required experience but will not substitute for the three years of code enforcement and fire cause investigation experience.

    A Bachelor’s degree in fire service administration or fire protection, fire science, or closely related fire service field may substitute for up to two years of the required experience but will not substitute for the three years of code enforcement and fire cause investigation experience.

    Requires possession of a valid Oregon Driver License.

    To comply with OAR 837-039-0110, you must have or have the ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of employment:

    • NFPA Fire Investigator Certification or equivalent

    • NFPA Fire Instructor I Certification or equivalent

    • NFPA Fire Inspector 2 Certification or equivalent

    • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector 2 certification

    • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner

    Preferred Skills:

    • Demonstrated ability to independently determine the needs of the assigned work area and determine a work schedule to address those needs.

    • Demonstrated ability to independently interpret and apply fire codes and fire laws to local jurisdictions and the community.

    • Demonstrated experience and ability to independently validate fire cause and origin determinations and ensure the integrity and legal significance of fire evidence.

    • Demonstrated high level, public speaking communication abilities in various complex environments.

    • Demonstrated leadership or fire officer experience as a collaborator and facilitator with programs, processes, and in emergency situations both independently and with a team.

    • Demonstrated ability in significant conflict resolution scenarios to produce successful outcomes while maintaining a professional demeanor.

    • Demonstrated ability to successfully operate in both high stress and high responsibility environments.

    • Certified NFPA Fire Investigator or equivalent.

    • Certified NFPA Fire Inspector 1 or equivalent.

    The Oregon State Police (OSP) is a multi-disciplined organization charged with protecting the people, wildlife, and natural resources in Oregon. We enforce the traffic laws on the state’s roadways, investigate and solve crimes, conduct post-mortem examinations and forensic analysis, and provide background checks and law enforcement data.     About the Division

    The Fire & Life Safety Division is mandated by law to perform duties to enhance fire and life safety for the citizens of Oregon. The Division directs and coordinates fire investigations, fire and life safety inspections, institutional occupancy fire prevention and Federal Medicare-Medicaid certification surveys.

    The Division ensures compliance with fire and life safety standards for federal funding of health care facilities; State Fire Code adoption and maintenance; analyzing and recommending adoption of and modifications to the Oregon Structural Specialty, One- and two-family dwelling, and mechanical codes. Additional tasks of the Branch are code enforcement and consultation functions concerning the adequate egress from all public buildings to assure the protection of all places where large numbers of persons work, live or congregate.

    The Division also leads the agency’s exempt jurisdictions program, developing and ensuring compliance with exemption rules and managing the program’s administrative functions.

    You will oversee, coordinate and provide fire and life safety code interpretation and enforcement, fire cause investigation, and fire prevention education services in an assigned district. This position also responds to all large-scale hazard emergencies across the state as needed.  This position is a general service district deputy.
