Orchards – ‘Young’

Posted on the 27 February 2019 by Spectralnights

Orchards follow last year’s ‘Losers/Lovers’ EP with the release of new single ‘Young’ (out on 7″ with ‘Mature Me’ via Big Scary Monsters on 29 March). The new songs will follow shows at New York’s New Collosus Festival and SXSW and accompany a UK tour.

The alt-pop banger opens with Sam Rushton’s trademark upbeat mathy and melodic guitar hooks and is all about ‘unrequited love, but a love that you’ve learned with hindsight wasn’t right for you in the first place’. Lucy Evers reminisces about this seemingly perfect relationship through the lens of nostalgia but quickly realises it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be: ‘If I scratched at the surface, I can feel the water beneath your feet and I know that we are sinking but I am breathing’.

She goes on to reminisce about meeting in the same places as when she was young to try and keep these memories alive before delivering a bold and defiant statement in spoken word halfway through the song:’I’ve decided now that I’m worthy of the very thing that you’re afraid of’. She also admits ‘Love is a concept I’ll never understand’ as the rest of the band bounce around every single word.
