Opinion Battles Round 14

Favourite Tom Hanks Role

Tom Hanks is one of the iconic actors of the modern era, two Oscar wins to his name as well as coming off as one of the nicest men in Hollywood. He has grown up too soon, fallen in love with Meg Ryan three times, gone into space, been left on an island and even saved a plane for of people after saving Matt Damon. The question is what the role we enjoy watching the most from him.

Michael Sullivan – Road to Perdition

Michael is a hitman for the mob, when he turned on by his boss he must go on the run with his last surviving son to keep him safe from the mob chasing him down. I am picking this role because it is so different to any other film Hanks ever did, he has always been the ‘nice’ guy but this film gives him chance to take the risks needed as an actor.

Woody – Toy Story

My favorite Tom Hanks role? It has to be Woody in the Toy Story films! I would imagine many will give that as an answer. His role as Josh in Big is a VERY close second for me but I have to go with the Pixar films. Who doesn’t love Toy Story & who doesn’t love the friendship/rivalry of Woody & Buzz?

Woody – Toy Story

Perhaps it feels like a bit of a cheat to choose Woody since its an animated character but Tom Hanks will always be known as his voice in Woody. Toy Story has brought so much joy to its viewers. Woody itself is an iconic Pixar character. There really isn’t any other choice. Tom Hanks has done a lot of pretty intense roles (and some lighthearted ones) but for myself, nothing beats a character that can seamlessly bring a smile to my face.

Woody – Toy Story

Overall, I find Hanks to be a great actor but someone who probably made it farther than he merits as far as super-stardom. He is great in whatever he does though from Bosom Buddies to Cast-Away to a host of other amazing films. I’m championing his voice-over role in “Toy Story” as Woody. It’s an iconic voice that really works for the animated character. I must admit in some of his on screen roles his voice is a little whiny for me but it truly works for Woody!

Woody – Toy Story

Hanks lends his unmistakable voice to one of Pixar’s most beloved protagonists and he is clearly irreplaceable in the role.

He puts his heart and soul into his performance, delivering laughs and tons of energy and this will always be a very special performance, especially for those who grew up watching this film.

A classic.

Rob – Movie Rob

Chuck Noland – Castaway

Tom Hanks is such an amazing actor and even though he has won two best actor actors, some of his best roles didn’t win him that award due to voters not wanting him to get a third statue before others got their first.

Throughout the 90’s he was superb in every role he took on; Philadelphia (1993), Forrest Gump (1994). Apollo 13 (1995), and Saving Private Ryan (1998) but his best role was on the cusp of that decade: Cast Away (2000).

Forget about the physical transformation (which is a feat in and of itself), and you get a film where more than 50% of it, the main actor must find a way to carry it all with little dialog and no one to really interact with and Hanks manages it with flying colors.

Woody – Toy Story

When getting ready for this round, I was trying to figure out another Tom Hanks role besides Woody that I really like since I’m sure Woody will be a popular pick. However, in looking at some of my other favorite roles of his, such as Josh in Big or  Carl Hanratty in Catch Me If You Can, I just couldn’t find myself picking anything else.  Woody and Buzz were such an integral part of my childhood in Toy Story and a huge part of that is because of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.  Their casting was spot-on and Hanks especially brings a unique voice to the cowboy doll.  Hanks made the character his own, creating a character that is likable, despite having some obvious flaws.  Rarely does a casting fit so well, especially in animation, but Hanks as Woody is one such example and I can not image anyone else in the role.
