OpenSea Introduces the ‘Seaport’ Marketplace Protocol, Enabling NFT Trading

The platform said, “OpenSea does not run or manage the Seaport protocol. We will be one of many who build on top of this common protocol.”

Nonfungible token marketplace OpenSea has said that it is making a Web3 marketplace protocol for “buying and selling NFTs in a safe and efficient way.”

In a blog post published on Friday, OpenSea said that the Seaport marketplace protocol would let users buy NFTs by selling things other than just payment tokens like Ether (ETH). The site says that a user “may agree to contribute a number of ETH/ERC20/ERC721/ERC1155 things” in exchange for an NFT, which is a way to pay that uses a mix of tokens.

SeaPort customers can also choose the criteria they want to use when making offers, such as certain features of NFT artwork or collection items. Tipping will also be allowed on the site, but the amount can’t be more than the original offer.

The NFT marketplace said, “OpenSea does not control or operate the Seaport protocol — we will be just one, among many, building on top of this shared protocol,” said the NFT marketplace. “As adoption grows and developers create new evolving use-cases, we are all responsible for keeping each other safe.”

Some people on social media didn’t understand the rules of the new market protocol. Twitter user EffortCapital asked people to look into how Seaport compares to 0x v4 NFT swaps, while Twitter user phuktep asked how tax forms would show the exchange of NFTs and ETH for a single token.

The launch marketplace protocol comes after OpenSea said in April that it had bought NFT marketplace aggregator Gem with the goal of making the user experience better for more experienced users. OpenSea planned to add Gem features like a tool to sweep the collection floor price and rankings based on rarity. At the time, the platform said that Gem would be a separate product, and OpenSea planned to add Gem features like a tool for sweeping collection floor prices and rankings based on rarity.
