When I was notified that Lisa Scottoline had released a new book, One Perfect Lie, I couldn’t wait to read it. In fact, I read it so fast that I completely forgot about writing my report. When I was reviewing my paperwork the other day, I noticed this book review was outstanding and thought I’d get busy reading the book only to discover I had already read (and loved) One Perfect Lie.
Without anything further, here’s my thoughts:
The first thing I will say is that the “jacket story” immediately had me very curious and excited to read the whole book. I always love a good thriller that contains multiple stories that eventually tie together in the conclusion (which is exactly how this story goes). The book was comprised of short – but very addicting – chapters that had me wanting to turn just one more page. I was lucky enough to be the passenger in a long car ride so I was able to breeze through most of the book in one sitting.
The very first sentence of the book tells people that there’s going to be a great story here:
“Chris Brennan was applying for a teaching job at Central Valley High School, but he was a fraud.”
That sentence immediately informs readers that this book will be full of lies and questions. Readers are encouraged to figure out exactly why Chris Brennan isn’t who he claims to be, and it spirals until we ultimately discover the “master plan” of the story. Of course, as is the case with most review of thriller-types of stories, to disclose any more of the plot will become a spoiler, which I refuse to write.
Readers will discover why Chris is there, what he wants and what he is willing to do to get it. Trust me when I tell you the book is full of twists and turns that get you when you least expect it. It was fast paced and kept my attention until I turned the last page. I won’t lie though, I was able to pick up on some of the surprises before they were revealed, but it didn’t affect my enjoying the book. One Perfect Lie was fast paced, kept my attention, and was well written. It is one of those emotional thriller types of suburban crime stories that will have readers flipping pages up util the very end.
