One Dead, 24 Injured in Rambukkana Fracas

One person died and 24 others were injured including 10 Police officers when police fired at protestors who had been blocking the level crossing in Rambukkana for more than 15 hours. Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said police fired at protestors after they started pelting stones at police personnel.

The people who were in queues at filling stations from yesterday morning staged a protest blocking  all entry and exit roads of the Rambukkana town yesterday. The protestors also blocked the level crossing which resulted in cancelling all train services on the mainline.

Police spokesman SSP Thalduwa said that the protestors set a three wheeler on fire.“They tried to set a blaze a fuel bowzer too. Police personnel managed to avert it, Thalduwa said.

He said the Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd but the protestors resorted pelting at police personnel.

The injured were admitted to the Kegalle General Hospital. Police sources said that the Sri Lanka Army has been deployed in the area.
