On Yogurt: Ice Fried Yogurt Gelato

By Foodobyte @foodobyte

There’s nitrogen ice cream. Deep fried ice cream. Ice fried ice cream. Now there’s “ice fried yogurt gelato” that’s actually made of yogurt, milk and cream served at On Yogurt down by BC Place. Sounded interesting, so some dietitians and I decided to check it out!

Simply put, they pour a yogurt/milk/cream liquid on top of a -35oC surface that instantly freezes it solid. Then the dessert is scraped into little scrolls, baring much resemblance to cheung fun.

On Yogurt offers over 40 toppings including fruits, nuts, pearls, oreos, etc… And all of their yogurt is organic and locally sourced from BC.

They also have some games and colouring books to play with while the desserts are being prepared.

Christina got the Matcha Waffle Combo ($7.49): ice fried matcha yogurt/gelato with red bean and condensed milk on top of a liege waffle. The combination of hot and cold worked really well together, and the sweetness from the waffle brightened up the matcha flavor. And who doesn’t love condensed milk?!

Megan got the Matcha with Mochi on the right ($4.69 +0.60/topping) while Fiona ordered the Matcha with Oreo. Both were topped with a savoury chip, which seemed kind of odd to me.

I ordered the Earl Grey with Oreo. It didn’t have the strongest earl gray flavour, but it still tasted pretty good. Even though it’s “ice fried,” the yogurt gelato was quite creamy. I imagine it to be better than nitrogen ice cream, which I’ve heard can be crumbly. There could’ve been a more oreo though…

Overall, it’s a neat place that serves modestly healthier desserts. And I guess its modest portion size makes it even healthier. But around this price point, I’d rather indulge in real ice cream at Earnest or Rain or Shine. On Yogurt does have fish on the wall though, so that’s pretty cool.
