On Field Injury - Moises Henriques and Rory Burns Nasty Collide ....
Posted on the 16 June 2015 by Sampathkumar Sampath
For 40 terrifying minutes on Sunday, English
cricket held its breath after a sickening collision between two Surrey
fielders. The crowd of 8,500 at Arundel were left stunned after Moises Henriques
and Rory Burns were knocked unconscious after running into each other at high
speed going for the same catch.
A skier – a mishit,
is dangerous – not for the batsman – more for the fielder running in – who can
mistime it – some have misjudged it badly, ending up in landing on body ….. in
Australia, a mishit of David Warner soared – ever effervescent Suresh Raina went
for it, took it splendidly, only to be collided on by IrfanPathan –
fortunately, both escaped without injury.
In a different way, Phil Hughes lost his life after being struck by a
bouncer. In 1976, the slinger Jeff
Thomson collided with Alan Turner and dislocated his right collarbone, and
perhaps was never the same on his return !
Another Aussie is
in news ~ MoisesHenriques suffered a
broken jaw in three places and Rory Burns facial injuries after the two
collided in a sickening blow that saw both left unconscious and hospitalised
and Surrey's match against Sussex at Arundel abandoned after 18.4 overs. UntilSteffanPiolet
top-edged an innocuous Tom Curran delivery into the offside, it was an
unremarkable afternoon at Arundel. But as Burns, running in from deep cover and
Henriques, peddling back from point, collided at pace and with their eyes on
the ball, completely unaware of the other's locality, its entire complexion
changed.
MoisesConstantinoHenriques, born in
Portugal played for Sunrisers Hyderabad [was part of more teams earlier]. He has so far played in 3 Tests, 6 One dayers
and 4 T20s. MoisesHenriques
was so young when he first came into the New South Wales squad that he could
train only in school holidays and often had to catch a taxi to practice. After
starring as captain of Australia's Under-19 side - he first made the team as a
16-year-old - with 16 World Cup wickets in Sri Lanka at 10.62 and 150 runs at
37.5. A 187cm opening bowler, Henriques
is the youngest player to collect ten wickets in a Sydney first-grade
match. Do you know that he made his
debut at Chepauk in Test no. 2074 in Feb 2013, which India won by 8
wickets. He made 68 and 81 not out.Now he is in
news for that broken jaw after horror collision with Rory Burns with both
players rushed to hospital after going for a catch at high speed.
Surrey players Rory
Burns and MoisesHenriques collided going for a catch - Physios rushed to the
players' aid and three ambulances came on to the pitch. Henriques suffered suspected broken jaw, Burns
had cuts to his head and eye. Surrey's
game with Sussex was abandoned. Henriques
suffered a broken jaw, Burns cuts to his head and eye. It needed three
ambulances to tend to them and both were given oxygen and put on intravenous
drips.
Surrey CCC posted
an update on Twitter saying: 'Latest
news on the two boys…… both Rory and Moises are in decent shape following their
operations overnight..further updates later in the day.' Both players were
looking into the sky at the ball and didn't see the other one coming. Henriques
was struck by his team-mate's knee before both fell face down, with medical
staff from each clubs quickly out onto the pitch who were soon joined by an
off-duty doctor who had been watching the match - Once they collided, Burns lay
motionless, with thoughts inevitably drifting to the tragic death of Australia
batsman Phil Hughes in Sydney seven months ago.
For the father of
24-year-old Burns, who was watching from the stands, it must have been
terrifying. One piece of misinformation circulating was that Henriques was
receiving CPR. Thankfully, rumor was quickly replaced by the sight of
Henriques and Burns both sitting upright and giving the thumbs up as they were
lifted into ambulances and taken to nearby St Richard's Hospital in Chichester. After
the collision, in which Henriques is believed to have also lost teeth, the game
was called off…… and at hospital the
injured players were snapped holding
hands in a show of support.
Umpire Alex Wharf
and his colleague Jeremy Lloyds decided to abandon the match after consulting
players from both teams, including Kevin Pietersen on his last outing for
Surrey.Wharf said: 'It was a horrific situation for everyone involved — the
players and the spectators who were close to the incident. We consulted with
the ECB and the captains and there was never any chance of the game
continuing.' Sussex's Craig Cachopa, who was batting when his partner
SteffanPiolet top-edged Surrey bowler Tom Curran into the offside which led to
the collision, said: 'It was horrible to see. I don't deal with those
situations well so I came straight off but the decision to call the match off
was the right one.'
Latest news is that
Rory and Moises are both in good spirits in hospital..Rory is waiting to have
stitches on head and facial injuries..Moises has broken his jaw in three places
and is waiting to have an operation..dental surgery is to follow…
