Recently I’ve been looking through my stashes and found the Grey and White Beanie yarn leftovers and also two rolls of light gray yarn of the same brand. This can be something, I thought… With three colors I could try to make something with an ombre effect, a beanie or a cowl. After some thinking I chose to knit a gradient beanie. And here’s how I did it:
To create an ombre effect you need to knit with two strands and combine strands of different colors to make the color transition more subtle.
Materials
– Size 8 (5.0mm) Circular Knitting Needles
– 1 Skein of Dark Grey Peru Soft Yarna Wool ( 500 gramms)
– 1 Skein of Dark Grey Peru Soft Yarna Wool ( 500 gramms)
– 1 Skein of White Peru Soft Yarna Wool (500 gramms)
Size
Hat diameter is 52 cm/20 in
Hat’s height from edge to the pom pom is 21cm/8in
Gauge
11 sts and 19 rows = 4×4 in or 10×10 cm in rib knit.
Abbreviations
Y1 / Yarn 1 – dark grey
Y2 / Yarn 2 – light grey
Y3 / Yarn 3 – white
K – knit
P – purl
P2tog – purl two stitches together
K2tog – knit two stitches together
Base of the hat
Take two strands of Yarn 1 and cast on 52 stitches. Join for knitting in the round. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the row, if you like.
Knit 2×2 rib ( K2, P2) until the decrease description.
Rows 1 – 13: Use two strands of Y1
Rows 14 – 19: Take one strand of Y1 and one strand of Y2
Rows 20 – 25: Two strands of Y2
Rows 26 – 30: Use one strand of Y2 and one strand of Y3
Decrease
I have tried to preserve the rib pattern even while making a decrease.
Row 31: P2tog every 7th’s and 8th’s stitch. As a result you will have 46 stitches left on your needles
Row 32: Use two strands of Y3. K2, P2tog, then P2tog every 6th’s and 7th’s stitch. You end up with 39 stitches left
Row 33: Knit
Row 34: K2, P1, K2tog, from this point K2tog every 5th’s and 6th’s stitch. You have 33 stitches left on your needles.
Row 35: K2tog, then K2tog every 4th’s and 5th’s stitch. You end up with 26 stitches and 1×1 rib.
Row 36: Knit one row of 1×1 rib without making any decreases.
Row 37: K2tog until the end of row
Row 38: K2tog until the end of row. This will leave you with 7 stitches on your needles.
Cut yarn and thread the remaining tail through these stitches. Pull tight and weave in the end on the inside of the beanie.
Here is the scheme of how to change the strands of different color during the knitting process:
Decorate
I thought that a two color pom pom will make a great addition to the hat. So I made a big fluffy yarn pom pom from yarn 1 and yarn3. You can find the description of the process here.
The beanie turned out to be very warm and wind resistant, because of two strands used during the knitting. Although the color transition is not that fluent, as it could be, I still love how the dark gray color at the bottom of the cap fades to the white at the top of it.
Here you can find a printer friendly PDF file of the pattern.
Here are few pics of me wearing the ombre beanie combined with a warm wool textile infinity scarf ( see how to make one yourself here )
