I recently watched the movie, "Same Kind of Different as Me," and all I can say is "Wow!" This film, based on a true story, will surely inspire you to do some good and have compassion for the less fortunate.
About the movie: Based on the New York Times best-selling book, and recipient of the Dove Foundation seal of approval for ages 12+, "Same Kind of Different as Me" follows successful art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear) and his wife Debbie (Renee Zellweger), who seemingly have the perfect life. But when their faith and family are tested, an unlikely bond with a homeless drifter (Djimon Hounsou) leads them on a remarkable journey that forges an everlasting friendship. "Same Kind of Different" as Me shows how a simple act of kindness can change everything.
This perfectly cast film shows how a family who has everything when it comes to wealth realizes that they have nothing when a secret rocks their comfortable world. Wife and mother Debbie realizes that her family must go after a different kind of success. And while her husband Ron is resistant at first, he soon discovers that Debbie is right when he befriends a homeless man whose life seems hopeless. Watching this movie inspired me to also read the book, which I am enjoying even more than the movie because it really delves into the life and feelings of Denver, the homeless man, giving more backstory as to why he ended up on the streets. I would recommend that you watch the movie and read the book to learn about this remarkable group of people who crossed class lines to realize that everyone is the "same kind of different" as everyone else.
Fortunately, "Same Kind of Different as Me" is now out on Blu-ray and DVD! The Blu-ray version includes more than an hour of behind-the-scenes bonus content. Or you can purchase a digital version of the movie at http://paramnt.us/GetSKODAMNow.
When I received a copy of the movie for review, I also received a Kindness Rocks Kit, which is an amazing project to do with your family! The idea behind this project is to collect rocks and paint inspirational messages on them. Then leave the rocks somewhere that they will be found by someone to brighten their day or give them to someone who could use a little compassion in their life. Check out the Kindness Rocks our family created:
When I showed them to a friend, she immediately begged for one to put outside her front door. She said it makes her smile every time she goes out or heads to work. It's a reminder of how fortunate she is and that her attitude can make or break her whole day. We also left rocks in a park, in the yard of a neighbor who has experienced struggles, in front of a church, and by a bus stop. Most of the rocks are gone now, and it is my hope that someone took them home to be inspired daily, just like my friend has been. I hope you'll give this project a try. Get the whole family involved!
