In the 1950s, fast food was born once automobiles became more affordable after World War I. One of the first fast food joints was White Castle, which sold burgers at five cents a pop. National Fast Food Day
- go out and celebrate by eating at your favorite fast food place. Fast food has become an American staple. There are over 300,000 fast food restaurants in the United States alone, making it nearly impossible to drive down the road without going by at least one fast food chain restaurant.
International Day for Tolerance
- On Dec 12, 1996, the General Assembly established the International Day for Tolerance, to commemorate the adoption by UNESCO member states of the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance in 1995. The United Nations Charter states: We, the peoples of the United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, ... to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, ... and for these ends to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours
Luke and Laura's Wedding (1981)
- The wedding of Luke and Laura is one of the biggest - if not the biggest moment on General Hospital and in all of soap opera history. Finally, on November 16, 1981, Luke and Laura were married outdoors in front of 30 million viewers! Today, soap operas are lucky if they get 2 million viewers.
National Button Day

Skylab 4 launched into Earth orbit (1973)
- This was the fourth and final mission for the space station. On this date (November 16, 1973), the crew of three astronauts arrived for their 84-day stay. During their time on the station, they performed scientific research in the areas of medical activities, solar observations, Earth resources, observation of the Comet Kohoutek and other experiments.
Walt Disney launches Epcot Center (1963)
- As Walt Disney originally envisioned it, the EPCOT Center (which stood for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) would be the key component of Walt Disney World - a working city of the future with residential, shopping and industrial districts which would showcase the latest technologies available. Walt's vision included forward thinking ideas such as clean (read: electric) transportation systems, and a city dominated by the pedestrian (all automobile traffic was to be underground).
