Nouns 3D-printed Fashion Collection Captures Attention at NFT Paris

The Nouns DAO funded the initiative, which utilized 3D-printed materials to create apparel based on the open-source NFT-based IP.

Last weekend, thousands of Web3 fans went to NFT Paris. In addition to panels and exhibits, people at the Grand Palais Éphémère got to see a fashion show based on NFT.

Danit Peleg, a fashion designer who utilizes new technologies, showcased her first collection of 3D-printed apparel inspired by Nouns at the event. The notable Ethereum project, which debuted in 2021, auctions off one new NFT per day and uses the proceeds to finance a community-driven and open-source intellectual property.

Peleg brought five outfits to the conference. Each one was based on an NFT from the valuable profile picture (PFP) collection and the Nouns brand as a whole. Many of the pieces have the boxy Nouns glasses, or “Noggles,” as well as detailed recreations of some of the avatars that have been made so far.

“I found inspiration in everything about Nouns, from the community to the NFT structure and the amazing things Nouns could do with their treasury,” Peleg told Decrypt this week. “I realized that the best way I can contribute to Nouns is by using my specific domain expertise in 3D printing and fashion.”

Each piece was designed and then made using different kinds of 3D printing, such as Polyjet, which lets you use different colors and textures, and Multi Jet Fusion, which has a velvety feel. Some of the clothes were printed so that the little Nouns characters had hinges between them, while others were just glued together with the printed pieces.

Peleg stated that the open-source, Creative Commons 0 (CC0) model attracted her to the project. This strategy allows anyone to create and sell their own brand-based products and initiatives. In fact, it is encouraged: NFT holders routinely fund initiatives through the daily auctions’ treasury of funds.

With almost $45 million worth of ETH in the Nouns treasury right now, the project has paid for a wide range of things, from comic books to TV pilots, a float in this year’s Rose Parade to other fashion projects and even a an appearance of Noggles in a Bud Light Super Bowl commercial.

In this case, Peleg was given a total of $140,000 over three milestones to design, build, and show off the 3D-printed apparel. She said that building trust with the community was the most important thing: “I started small, delivered value, and grew the support from the community—and then I got higher funding as trust was established.”

Peleg is a pioneer in 3D-printed couture. In 2015, when she was a student, she made her first collection, which went viral online. After that, she gave a TED Talk that has been watched nearly 2 million times. Her work was also shown at the 2016 Rio Paralympics opening ceremony.

When Decrypt asked pseudonymous Nouns co-founder 4156 about the comics project in early February, he said that Nouns was focused on “creating opportunities for people with very deep expertise within their own fields, to have a facility to collaborate with an open-source brand.” Peleg’s collection is another way in which this process is used.

Will we eventually see 3D-printed Nouns apparel out in the everyday world? Peleg stated that she would “love to take the collection around the world to showcase it,” and she’s thinking about doing an open edition NFT drop for the digital assets, like she’s done before with her 3D-printed fashion designs.
