Notes of Great Teacher Onizuka 2014 Episode 4

Dude, you have cardboard box-kun with you, appreciate it!

Last week’s GTO had Satsuki get abducted twice by two different groups with only one shared intention (humiliation), but Onizuka stepped in and saved the day.

Summary of Great Teacher Onizuka 2014 Episode 4

  • Masaru Kiritani (Ryota Katayose), who quit the school’s basketball team, admits to his father, Fujikawa, and Onizuka that he found out he was a special adoption, and he was tired of learning or thinking about basketball. As Onizuka struggles to figure out what to do about this, Kiritani’s working with a shady group and does their bidding. After Onizuka manages to show how important Kiritani’s dad was to him, the group shows up at the school to retrieve what Kiritani was supposed to bring to them. They end up getting caught by the police.

My Take

  • Let’s just say this episode had me smiling a lot more than last’s week episode. That’s probably a good thing, all things considered.
  • Probably the reason why it was better because the actual storyline this week wasn’t terribly heavy (or complicated) compared to last week’s and prior episodes. This isn’t an episode to short change, since it has to do with being adopted and family relationships.
  • …And unlike the usual stories, this happens to involve a kid who lost her mom after he was born and then soon lost his other mom as he was growing up. Considering the nature of the situation, he would need to know the circumstances of his birth, so I have no idea why his dad kept it a secret all this time. You’d think the perfect time to say so would be in middle school, but he kept that hidden well into Kiritani’s high school life.
  • That all said, it was not cool of Kiritani to completely throw away everything he was happy about and then take that out on his teammates by quitting, and then choose to interact with dangerous people. How the hell do these kids find these places? Whatever the case, yeah he’s not your “blood” family, but he is the one that raised you, and while he made his mistakes, he raised you earnestly. Escaping and doing shady crap is not the best way to pay your father back.

  • Random thought as I talk about the rest of the episode I gathered: the camera work seemed a lot better in this episode, and not as disorienting.
  • One weird aspect of GTO 2014 when compared to GTO 2012 is the awareness it seems everyone has regarding their actions in certain points, which makes it hard to actually hate anybody. For example last week’s episode one of the teachers took a picture using Satsuki’s phone of everyone, and this week, the doctor and Fujikawa bringing up Uncle Barhopper in the office after they’re supposedly wondering what’s going on with Kiritani…compared to the atmosphere where no one really liked Onizuka, it’s definitely a weird feeling…

  • Of course, this issue that has been stalled since Ep 1 (kind of) is a good indicator that the sense of fun and happy times can end in an instant. Right now the only thing I can comment on (since I’ve already brought up all the other issues) for this is how the pressure of Ayuna not revealing she is pregnant is pretty big. Considering we don’t know how that actually happened yet, her age, how her classmates will view her, etc, it’s definitely rough. The problem is that she hasn’t shared this with anyone. Like, as far as I know, anyone. Does she not trust her boyfriend? Does she not have a friend to go to? Parents? The more she hides it, the worse it can only get. Also the more she doubles over in pain, the more I’ll get the checklist on what to always expect in every GTO episode.
  • Anyways, this episode managed to be more smile worthy than actually super super serious. That’s a good thing in this case, though it looks like it’s gonna get heavy in Episode 5.
