Not Your Grandmother’s Florals

By Linsibrownson @CleverSpark

The floral pattern is always a risk. It’s always a highly-stylized pattern which changes every season – so it dates very quickly.

If you’re an 80s/90s child like me, you may be very wary of wearing florals because it might remind you of either nightmarish floral sailor dresses (think: Easter 1988, Steel Magnolias) or shapeless baby doll dresses (think: Courtney Love).

Fortunately, the florals of spring/summer 2013 are much more sophisticated. A couple weeks ago, I talked about the African influence on fashion for spring 2013. One part of that trend which is seen strongly almost everywhere is bright, bold color.

If anything, these florals remind me of the vacation prints of the 60s. So, I guess they are kind of like your grandma’s florals – but not in a bad way.

The key to wearing florals is to avoid pairing them with white (so as not to look like you’re dressed up for Easter). Instead, pair with black or other, solid bright colors.
