Nokia Lumia 1020 with 41-megapixel camera has now officially launched in New York City at a dedicated press event, after months of rumour and speculation.

The new Nokia Lumia 1020 Windows Phone 8 smartphone offers all that was previously thought and more.

Around the back is the phone’s main feature, an f/2.2 41-megapixel camera with Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss lens. On the front there is also a 1.2-megapixel camera, but that pales in comparison.

The phone has many of the same features and much of the same technology as the Nokia Lumia 925 launched recently. There is a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor, although this time around there is 2GB of RAM – presumably for picture rendering – and 32GB of storage. An extra 7GB of cloud storage comes free, care of Microsoft’s Skydrive.

The screen features a 4.5-inch AMOLED 1280 x 768 display, which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. And connectivity options include NFC, HSPA+, LTE (4G), Bluetooth and, of course, Wi-Fi.

A stack of free Nokia apps are included, with the Here mapping and navigation service on board.

Nokia suggests the Lumia 1020 “reinvents” the way smartphones handle zoom

Optical image stabilisation is a given for a camera of this quality, and it is capable of video recording in 1080p. If you fancy making use of 6x zoom, you will have to record in 720p however.

Audio recording can be made through stereo microphones, for a more rounded experience.

Price for the UK is yet to be revealed, but it is understood to cost $299.99 (£199) on an AT&T two-year contract in the States. It will be an AT&T exclusive. Release date in the US is also set for 26 July – just two weeks away – other regions, including Europe will follow “this quarter”.
