Edinburgh duo No Windows (multi-instrumentalist Morgan Morris and lyricist Verity Slangen) are releasing their latest EP ‘The Great Traitor’ via Fat Possum Records on 9 May, 2025. Drawing on inspirations ranging from Leonard Cohen and George Harrison to film composer Jon Brion, the six songs were written and recorded during a time of personal upheaval and reflect what ‘felt like the transition from adolescence to adulthood’.
‘Brown Bear’ opens the EP with an almost gothic alt-folk feel, with echoes of early Sharon Van Etten as Verity sings about love and crying over the truth against a swaying soundtrack. The Arab Strap-esque ‘Return’ continues in this open and honest vein with a promise to not turn into the girl a man wants to be and fascinating vocal interplay.
‘Tricky”s opening line is full of intrigue: ‘Don’t speak, you know I can be a little mean, not intentionally’. This is soon followed by a desire to strip naked and become the subject’s ‘favourite patient’ and the admission that ‘I’m going crazy for you’. ‘Sugarcoat’ finds the duo back in a sparser space with fragmented instrumentation and an admission of ‘I’m feeling shit’.
‘Old Chain Pier’ has a stop-start, almost orchestrak sound and rawness that brings to mind Josh T. Pearson with its storytelling, while the closing ‘Easter Island’ has the duo deciding it’s ‘time to go back to sleep’ against a warming and nostalgic, almost cinematic backing.
Open up your world to No Windows and let them in – you won’t regret it.
