Nina Simone Birth House Recognized as National Treasure

Nina Simone birth house in North Carolina has been recognized as a national treasure.

On Tuesday, the house was named a “National Treasure” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933, Simone taught herself to play piano in the home.   it is also where she grew up experiencing the severe restrictions of the Jim Crow south.

Between 1958 and 1993, the singer released more than 60 live and studio albums.

She passed away in 2003, at the age of 70.
