Nimesh and Bimandee Emerge Champions

Bimandee Bandara of Hillwood College Kandy and Nimesh Ranchagoda of Sri Lanka Navy emerged as women’s and men’s open champions at the 75th National Table Tennis championship concluded at the S. Thomas’ Gymnasium yesterday.

The promising TT star Bimandee Bandara who won the junior national champion title last week has excelled at this senior event to win the open women’s title defeating Maneesha Salindi of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda while Nimesh Ranchagoda defeated Hiruna Warusavithna to take the men’s open title in their final.

Both men’s and women’s singles champions Bimandee Bandara and Nimesh Ranchagoda were adjudged the Most Outstanding Paddlers of the tournament.

Meanwhile, former National champion Ishara Madurangi clinched the doubles title as she won the mixed double final with partner Chameera Ginige defeating Isuru Hansana and Sanduni Prabodhika while Ishara Madurangi partnered with Hansani Piyumila to win the women’s doubles title defeating Bimandee Bandara and Ayla Chetty.

The two Ranchagoda brothers Nimesh and Sisas clinched the men’s doubles final when they defeated Warusawithna brothers Hiruna and Supun respectively. This men’s doubles final created history as the first time two pairs of brothers met in a final at this national championship.

The men’s consolation final was won by Umesh Neluminda defeating Senul Ratnayake while Hasini Sandeepani emerged as consolation women’s champion beating Dinewni Dissanayake.

Managing Director of Yeti, Dr. Dilshan Balasuriya was the Chief Guest and gave presented the main awards.

Former TTASL President Chandana Perera and the senior officials of TTASL were also present at the awards presentation.
