Sri Lanka’s veteran long distance runner Nilani Ratnayake produced her second fastest timing in the Women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase event at the Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) organised Special Trial Meet held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama yesterday.

The meet was conducted by SLA in preparation for the Sri Lankan athletes who are in line to represent the country under the ‘Quota’ system at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States.

Yupun Abeykoon (Men’s 100m), Gayanthika Abeyratne (Women’s 800m), and Sarangi de Silva (Women’s long jump) are the other Sri Lankan athletes who are in contention to represent the country at the World Athletics Championships.

Ratnayake returned a time of 9:46.39s and managed to add one point to her aggregate total of 1,184 to complete a successful ‘Road to Oregon’ journey for Sri Lanka.

However, Ratnayake, who had earlier clocked 9:40.24s in this event at the 2022 National Championships, will remain in the same ranking of 38th position. (C.D.)
