Police have used a sketch artist to determine the most likely appearance of the parents. They hope that one of them comes forward, to at the least sign off on the adoption papers. However, they have made it clear that they will charge them for child endangerment and abandonment.
Texas has an infant safe heaven law, which allows mothers to anonymously give up their babies to designated locations where they can receive care until they are placed in a permanent home.
Let me be clear that I think that abandoning a child, let alone a newborn, in a plastic bag is NOT okay. I had to think this case over a little bit. I didn’t want to in haste quickly rush to judgment. I, like most others in the public, have no idea what happened and why it happened. There are a myriad of reasons that this child could have been abandoned. The mother could be a young teen who was maybe raped or was hiding her pregnancy. It may very well be the case since it didn’t seem the mother received any prenatal care.
The mother could have left the child outside the apartment complex knowing that someone was likely to walk by the shrubs. She may have not known about the Texas safe haven law. Another possibility is that she may have left the baby and then regretted it and came back to take her back but the woman had already found her.
For all we know the father is the one who abandoned the baby. My point is that we don’t know the circumstances; although that doesn’t excuse them for abandoning the baby. I think it is pretty dumb that the police want either parent to come forward, yet by the same token said they would arrest them if they did. Way to make someone do the right thing.
I personally wouldn’t be able to abandon my child. I will never fully understand how one could look at this cute baby girl with her miracle smile and decide to give her up. But I’m not the parent and she’s not my kid. I don’t know the circumstance and don’t know what happened.
What do you think?
