Oscar-winning actor and artist Tom Hanks worked with Orange Comet, a Web3 creative studio business, to make and distribute his first NFT series, called the Eternal Collection.
Hopkins told reporters during an online news conference, “NFTs are a blank canvas to create art in a new format.”
“offers an incredible opportunity to connect with an audience in an entirely different way… I’m probably the oldest guy in the NFT community and on social media, which proves all is possible at any age.”
Digital artifacts from Hopkins’s Eternal Collection are meant to “conceptualize” ten different character archetypes from the actor’s filmography, such as Hannibal Lecter from “The Silence of the Lambs” and Odin from three Marvel “Thor” movies.
Dave Broome, CEO of Orange Comet, says that the Hopkins NFTs will be available on OpenSea, the largest NFT market, in the middle of September. Hopkins and his wife, Stella Arroyave, want to give some of the money to a charity of their choice.
The NFT will be given out in 3 phases:
For the Iconic Category, we will be auctioning off a single animated NFT with examples of all ten archetypes (The Giver, The Hero, The Jester, The Ruler, The Lover, The Explorer, The Creator, The Sage, The Rebel and The Magician). The highest bidder will also get to have a “intimate lunch or brunch” with Hopkins and a signed copy of “Dreamscapes,” which has hundreds of full-color photos of paintings and sketches by the actor.
In the Legendary Class, there are ten animated NFTs with different types of legendary characters that are one-of-a-kind. In addition to the framed NFT artwork and signed copy of Hopkins’ “Dreamscapes” book, buyers will have the chance to talk privately with the artist (through Discord).
Specialized Class: One thousand completely original pictures made from the Big Ten types (100 variants for each). Hopkins has also signed a print of one of the NFT characters, in addition to the archetypes. Also, 39 lucky buyers will get a signed copy of “Dreamscapes,” and five lucky buyers will be able to talk with the actor on Discord.
Hopkins became known as a painter when Harte International Galleries put on a one-man show of his abstract paintings in 2005. The company that handles Hopkins’s art, Margam Fine Art, talked to Orange Comet about making an NFT based on one of Hopkins’s paintings. Broome said that the two of them working together was “an amazing combination of art and technology from one of the best performers and artists of our time.”
Broome, a veteran of shows like “The Biggest Loser,” “Ultimate Beastmaster” and “Jennifer Lopez: Halftime.” co-founded Orange Comet in 2021, at the height of the NFT craze, with the idea that making original digital-collectible content based on well-known Hollywood properties would be a winning strategy. The Walking Dead on AMC Networks has been the most ambitious NFT project that the company has done so far.
Broome says that the “Dinosaurs vs. Aliens” comic book by filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld inspired Orange Comet to make 3D collectible NFTs. Broome said that he never sold the movie rights. Broome wants to go back to Hollywood and pitch “Dinosaurs vs. Aliens” if Orange Comet is able to build a strong fan base for the movie.
Broome said that the current NFT industry is full of gamblers who want to make money quickly, just like the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s. “The barrier to entry for NFTs is so low,” he said. This means that there are a lot of “crap” NFTs. Don’t be fooled, only the strong will survive. Broome says that the company is working on more than 40 entertainment-related projects that he can’t talk about yet because Web3 and blockchain technology are secret. Gloria and Emilio Estefan and Kurt Warner, who is in the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame, are among the people who back Orange Comet.
Hopkins and Orange Comet’s chief creative officer, Dante Ferrarini, were in charge of making the NFT designs for the Eternal Collection.
