New Music: Fjords

Fjords

Apparently a Fjord is “a group of seven people or things,” this is why Fjords are so called for they are exactly that.

Just as Scottish bands are lazily compared to indie bands with a northern accent, the Welsh are similarly lumbered with comparisons to Stereophonics and Manic Street Preachers. It’s easy to do, saying perhaps that thier music is akin to the former and the vocals the latter….

Adamant as I am that this should not be the case I have the tracks at my disposal a “right old seeing to”. The fact that there is so much going on, particularly the brass and guitars as well as female underscoring from “Cinders” on the empassioned Listen to Me.

She takes a more prominent role on Conversations sparring with Sonny for the spotlight. The keys with brass and distorted bass make this feel like a late 80s “pop hit”.

It takes a few listens to take everything in that Fjords throw at you but it does work and it’s nice and atmospheric. I like this lot, do go and check them out. Listen to them, follow them on twitter and just generally be excellent to each other.

Oh and a comparison? Talking Heads Ft. Kate Bush.
