Since 2007, when Levi’s conducted a life-cycle assessment of some of its major products, the company has become increasingly conscious of the sustainability of the raw materials it uses to produce its clothing. In response, the company is making changes to become more eco-friendly.

Last month, according to Business Week, Levi’s introduced its first line of jeans made from recycled plastic bottles. The company that manufactures the denim for Levi’s, Cone Denim, came up with a proprietary system to spin plastic into thread. Cone weaves the plastic thread into the jeans alongside cotton. Each pair of jeans contains about eight plastic bottles and is 20% plastic. Don’t worry, Levi lovers, Waste-Less plastic jeans are almost identical to Levi’s regular line in both feel and look.

Cone used 3.5 million plastic bottles in manufacturing its first batch of jeans for Levi’s. The first Waste-Less collection will include men’s and women’s jeans as well as jean jackets and will range in price from $69 to $128. The Waste-Less line should hit stores some time in 2013.
