Netlabel Day 2015

Netlabel Day 2015 is this coming Tuesday: July 14th.  What is it?  Who is involved? And why should I care?  Well, read on….

The Background

Manuel Silva started MIST Records in 2012, having decided that he wanted to share a lot of music that he had archived.over the years.  Since starting his netlabel he had noticed the “Record Store” day events and wondered why there wasn’t a similar event for Netlabels?  And, with that idea he started working on the idea of starting an event.

He selected July 14th as the date for the event since it’s is also the 20th Anniversary of the MP3. He was able to line up support from The Internet Archive, VKRS Radio, Pilot 11, Region 16 Radio, Sonidos Del Pais Radio, and The Free Music Archive.

And, with the support in place, Manuel set about setting up the Netlabel Day website, and created a Faceebook Page for the event which, as of this writing, has over 1200 likes! And then he started recruiting Netlabels to join in the madness of trying to pull an event together.  And then things started getting interesting as word-of-mouth started spreading about the event.

The Response

The response to the idea was pretty astounding: 86 netlabels and artists signed on to participate from around the world.  And the idea seemed to catch fire pretty well.  Manuel was interviewed for WFMU’s Radio Free Culture show.

And several others took to the airwaves on other podcasts like The Kernel Panic Oggcast to promote Netlabel Day:

In Argentina, Nicolas Gonzalez decided that the event deserved an even higher profile, so he put together gigs for several bands to happen on July 14th, in support of Netlabel Day, and organized a Facebook page to announce it.  But, Nicolas didn’t stop there.  No, he got interviewed by Argentina’s TV Publica’s Vision 7 Rock show about Netlabel Day

And, along the line, several others started releasing mixes, shows, and writing articles in support of Netlabel Day, including:

And there were quite a few other happenings spread all over the internet.
