Neomo’s Otaku Theater: Charlotte Episode 9

  • So much finally revealed. And here I was thinking Charlotte would fizzle away…but where exactly have I seen this before?…
  • …Oh yeah, that’s right; Angel Beats! Good versus evil. Light versus dark. Us against them. People disagreed with me that these kooky kids were some kind of X-men/Avengers/Justice League group, but here we are. Now I’m left hanging on what is going on. No seriously, by the time the episode finished, I was just as confused as Yuu was, but not by the sudden appearance by a big brother who he initially had thoughts of having, but of other things:

1. Who has which ability? They seem to be inter-switching now thanks to big brothers’ initial ability.
2. Why leave it as it was? The very least big brother could do was give some kind of tiny explanation to keep us hooked for the next episode.
3. Did Nao really know about this operation the whole time? And if so, why did she keep it from Yuu?

  • While I appreciate the fact that we were finally given some information concerning the elusive big brother, I found this week’s offering a little too heavy. For instance, this so-called ‘flashback’ that Yuu has when listening to that one live song (if it is indeed a true flashback)…this entire episode might as well have been one episode, since we had so much in terms of what Yuu was a part of, what the place they lived in was, about the other people living in said place, and we even got to see imouto! And this was the one thing: we were teased! Now we don’t know what to think whether she’s still out there or not. Considering the events of episode 6, it would be kind of a miracle to think she actually made it out of that in one piece, but then again at this stage, I don’t know whether to think miracles can’t happen now. Of course we’d all want imouto to come back with her yummy pizza sauce goodness, but pigs are capable of flying. Yeah, with creepy-looking big brother’s ability, anything can happen.

  • I mean seriously…I wouldn’t care who you were…would you really hug this guy?
  • On a side note, though, I do love how Yuu and Nao are connecting more. The fact that Yuu was in such a panic on what to wear on his first date made me crack up; come on…
  • And will we see Joujirou and Yusa/Misa again? I hope not, but there’s something at the back of my mind that they’ll end up getting roped into this ‘resistance’ movement who’ll no doubt make some kind of X-men style ambush on the facility other kids were being held and do some kind of rescue operation. Joujirou can be handy with his super-sonic speed and stuff, and Misa can be handy with her pyrotechnics, but what the hell could Yusa do?! Do ‘magic spells’ to boost morale of fellow resistance members? Most likely. In fact, if that actually turns out to happen, I will like Charlotte even more than I currently do. People I know dropped the show episodes ago, and now I’m honestly starting to see why. While the show oozes everything that Studio Key/Jun Maeda is capable of doing, the fact remains right now: while Yuu, Nao and Ayumi are very well written, everything else has seemed to fall flat. It even almost feels like Maeda had run out of ideas a little, and chose to rely on that other P.A Works he did to fill in any blanks.
  • I mean, the sudden arrival of a ‘resistance movement’ in the show?! Where have we all seen that from?
But it would be kind of cool if we saw Ayumi again…
  • So now from here on in we won’t have these kooky lot going to the fancy-looking student council room and finding kids and making them stop using their abilities. They’ve upgraded to a top-secret mountain facility. They’ll be missing a lot of school. Well either way, this so-called movement will be in a midst of a great rescue operation, planning every single detail in their new crib. Big brother will be the top dog, Yuu will be his underling and he and Nao will be secretly pining for each other some more. So much for Yuu’s first date: Panicking on what to wear, to watching Nao’s favorite band, to having a ‘vision’ of himself, Ayumi and big brother in a secret facility with mean people carrying carbine rifles, to waking up in a hospital bed, to arriving to another secret facility, to having a reunion with a brother he didn’t know he had… Exciting? Kind of. Envious? Not really. Just a movie and a family restaurant would have done for me…
Dat blush.
