Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially has informed the appointment of Naveed Nawaz, former Sri Lanka Test and ODI player, as the Assistant Coach of the National Team for a two year term, effective from last April 1.
Nawaz the 48 year old left hander, before taking over the new role, was functioning as the Head Coach of the Bangladesh under 19 Team, where he led the team to an ICC under 19 Cricket World Cup win in 2020.Nawaz played a solitary test against Bangladesh in 2002 and played three ODI’ s for the National team. After retiring from Cricket he was the Sri Lanka under 19 National coach as well as consultant coach to National women’s team in 2009.
His first assignment with the national team will be the upcoming Sri Lanka Tour of Bangladesh, which will also be the first such assignment of the newly appointed Head Coach of the National Team Chris Silverwood.
In the meantime, the three specialist coaches were appointed to work with the national team during the upcoming Sri Lanka Tour of Bangladesh. The former National fast bowler Chaminda Vaas once again re appointed as Fast Bowling Coach while former National leg spinner Piyal Wijetunge (Spin Bowling Coach) and Manoj Abeywickrama -( Fielding and Support Coach ) were are appointment for the same posts to support the National team Mahinda Halangoda will be the Team Manager for the Bangladesh tour and former National under 19 team manager first time with the National team.
Sri Lanka Test sqaud is expected to resume training on Wednesday ( 20) with new coaching staff at the R.Premadasa Stadium .The head coach Chris Silverwood is expected to arrive today (18)and he will conduct 10 day residential training camp before taking the team to Bangladesh on May 8. However the skipper Dimuth Karunaratne will be away in England for county season for Yorkshire while Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis both are engaged with Dhaka Premier League will straight away join the team in Bangladesh. Skipper Karunaratne will leave for England today(18) for the country matches while he will join the team on May 9.
Sri Lanka will play a two match test series during the tour of Bangladesh, under the ICC World Test Championship which will commence from May 15 .The first test will be held from May 15 to 19 in Chittagong while second test will start from May 23 to 27in Minpur, Dhaka.
