Peter (Richard Short, The Tragedy of Macbeth and Tom Clancey’s Jack Ryan TV series), a vicar in a small New Zealand town, has his faith tested when he is denied the right to marry his Samoan partner Jason (Nick Afoa, The Lion King on stage) in the church that he has dedicated his life to. When word gets out it divides the local community and unleashes a media storm that tests the couple’s relationship to the limit. However, the arrival of Jason’s gender-fluid nephew, Billy (Joe Malu Folau) brings potentially extra complications but also offers an unexpected way forward.
Mysterious Ways is a powerful, courageous story that challenges the church’s attitude towards the LGBT+ community, celebrating that with understanding faith, culture and sexuality can co-exist. It also explores the almost magical reverence of third gender fa’afafine identity of Samoan society that has been highlighted in the Next Goal Wins documentary and film.
