In each entry of this series, participating RTW travelers highlight one experience or destination they consider a favorite from their trip and share what they loved about it.
Today's #myRTW interview features Paula from Paula Through the Looking Glass. Her long-term trip took her to five countries in South East Asia from January to July 2014. For her, the experience she recalls as a favorite was riding a motorbike along the length of Vietnam for six weeks in March/April 2014.
In her words, Paula explains the journey...
Boy Was It Exhilarating
"I had never ridden a motorbike before, but yet managed to ride 2099km up Vietnam over a 6 week period, and it was the best experience of my life (so far!!). It was the scariest & most challenging thing I’ve ever done, but boy was it exhilarating, and above all it allowed me to experience Vietnam in a way most travellers never get to experience.
One of the waterfalls I came across, just outside Buon Ma Thuot along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, was awe-inspiring, but meant an unbelievably hard ride on roads that really cannot be described as roads! They were more like mud tracks with huge potholes and boulder sized bumps, of which the Vietnamese seemed to be able to navigate with no problems at all. I soon realized the knack of it was to have confidence and just go…fast! Momentum was everything but damn it was scary.
For the adventurous of you out there motorbiking Vietnam is a MUST when it comes to experiencing the ‘real’ Vietnam…the feeling of achievement when I landed in Hanoi was like nothing I’d experienced during my 10 years of working in an office that’s for sure!"
